Pt. Rajashekhar Mansur (born in 1942) is a Hindustani Classical vocalist of the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana. He is the son and disciple of Hindustani vocalist Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur. A journey into Hindustani Classical Music needs a lifetime of unswerving dedication and devotion.An in depth study and dissemination of literature needs another.But Professor/Pandit Rajshekar Mansur has famously pursued both with equal passion in one life time, in the manner of a true sadhaka. Son and Shishya of Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur, the doyen of Jaipur Atrauli Gharana, Rajshekar Mansur was born in 1942.
His father’s music was in the air at home and he subconsciously absorbed it even as he was immersed in his books. The musical talent lay dormant but was always attuned to the music at home. In his 16th year, he suddenly took his father by storm when he performed Rag Malkauns in his college gathering. Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur quickly realised the hidden talent of his son and began imparting rigorous talim. Within a couple of years , Rajshekar won the gold medal in Sangeet Visharad exam and went on to bag the 1st prize in the AIR Youth Music Competition. After this there was no looking back for both the father guru and the son shishya.However, Rajshekhar continued to pursue his academic career, completing his M.A. in English Literature and an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Wales on a British Council Scholarship.He taught literature and linguistics for nearly 35 years and retired as a Professor and Chairman of the English Department, Karnatak University, Dharwad. In all these years , he continued to pursue music, giving vocal support to his illustrious father and also performing independently at various prestigious music festivals and on the radio. As an engish teacher he has sesitized many a young mind with literary sensibility and acumen.He has guided innumerable scholars for M.phil and Ph.D.He is not only an exemplary literature teacher but also an eminent music guru.Each music lesson under his guidance is an event in it self for his shishyas.The intricate nuances of the Jaipur Atrauuli Gayaki are expounded with purity and patience. Many of his music students are today performing artists.Panditji has not only been a custodian of the rich treasure bequeathed by his father but has also richly contributed to the gharana by his inimitable style. His music is multidimensional where laya, sur and rasa are soulfully intervoven. He has taken upon himself the onerous task of giving currency to aprachalit ragas like Meghavali,Lachcha – Sakh, Godhan Gouri, Bilawal Prakars, Nat Prakars, Malhars and many more. He handles the Jod and Sankirna ragas with great ease, treating them as ragas with distinct identities/pehechans. He is now Top Grade Vocalist in the AIR.He has performed extensively in many prestigious music festivals throughout the country. The Karnatak Government has recognised his contributions to music by awarding him the Rajyotsava Award(1997).He was nominated as the chairman of Karnatak Sangeet Nrutya Akademi( 2005–2008).He is also the recipient of Karnatak Kalashri Gaurav Award (2009).His music has been preserved in the archives of Indira Gandhi Manav Sangrahalaya in Bhopal.
