Arshad Ali Khan born in on May 11th 1984 is a prodigious classical vocalist, a scholar of the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata, is indeed someone on whom one has pinned great hopes for the future as a s uccessful representative of the Kirana gharana tradition of Khayal singing.
Born in a family of well known musicians of this gharana, Arshad is the grandson of Sarangi maestro, Padmashree Ustad Shakoor Khan. He undergoes rigorous traning from his maternal uncle, Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan, respected guru at the Academy, and also from Mashkoorji’s younger brother, Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan.
eginning his days at the Academy more than a decade ago as a child with an ability to learn the bubtler nuances of vocalism at remarkable speed and efficiency, Arshad was fortunate enough to have grown up and studied in this elite atmosphere surcharged with the presence of great gurus from the major gharanas as well as an incredible collection of the best music of the maestros of the past. It was therefore no wonder that in 1993, he was described as “ the biggest sensation of the Sawai Gandharva Sammelan” when he performed there on a special invitation from Pandit Bhimsen Joshi on the occasion of the latter’s 75th birth anniversary. Today, at the young age of 22, he has already featured in prestigious festivals in India and abroad with an astonishing impact on his audience, the Bhatkhande Sangeet Sammelan, Lucknow (2000), the Harivallabh Sangeet Natak Akademi, Patna(2005) being a few among them. Arshad has been awarded the “Jadubhatta Purashkar” in 2002 and his solo albums “Murchhana” and Immortal” have also been released recently. In 2007 he published the album Sparkling Kirana, with Bhupal Todi, Darbari Kanhara and Multani.
